Package: apt
Version: 2.6.1devuan1

Severity minor
I have tried to install too many packages in single call to apt.
Sometimes instead of doing upgrade I prefer to do a clean install of the
system followed by installation of missing packages. To find which packages
shoud be added I make a diff of lists of packages installed before
reinstallation and after it and edit it to leave only necessary things.

So I had a huge list of missing packages in a text file, I have prepended a
command: "apt install" to it and tried to execute it in a shell. And I have
got a surprising message like: "no such package install". It took me some
time to discover what is the actual reason.
Afterwards when I split the list into smaller chunks and prepended "apt
install" to each chunk then everyting was installed successfully. Only I
had to type Y several times instead of one.

I suggest to set proper error message indicationg that the line is too long.
One more observation - it is probably not the length of the input line
important but rather the length of the line resulting after adding
dependencies.
NB. Older versions of apt/apt-get accepted such huge lists without any
problems.

Not sure if there is also an effect of system limits. However we have
forked the apt package in Devuan only to patch out systemd dependencies.
The source is otherwise unchanged from Debian versions. Thus for most
benefit, the problem should be fixed in Debian already.

Could you please report your finding to Debian's bugtracker using apt
package version 2.6.1. Thanks for your support!

cheers,
Andreas

Not sure if there is also an effect of system limits. However we have
forked the apt package in Devuan only to patch out systemd dependencies.
The source is otherwise unchanged from Debian versions. Thus for most
benefit, the problem should be fixed in Debian already.

Could you please report your finding to Debian's bugtracker using apt
package version 2.6.1. Thanks for your support!

cheers,
Andreas
