Sometimes instead of doing upgrade I prefer to do a clean install of the system followed by installation of missing packages. To find which packages shoud be added I make a diff of lists of packages installed before reinstallation and after it and edit it to leave only necessary things. So I had a huge list of missing packages in a text file, I have prepended a command: "apt install" to it and tried to execute it in a shell. And I have got a surprising message like: "no such package install". It took me some time to discover what is the actual reason. Afterwards when I split the list into smaller chunks and prepended "apt install" to each chunk then everyting was installed successfully. Only I had to type Y several times instead of one. I suggest to set proper error message indicationg that the line is too long. One more observation - it is probably not the length of the input line important but rather the length of the line resulting after adding dependencies. NB. Older versions of apt/apt-get accepted such huge lists without any problems. -- System Information: Distributor ID: Devuan Description: Devuan GNU/Linux 5 (daedalus) Release: 5 Codename: daedalus Architecture: x86_64 Kernel: Linux 6.1.0-10-amd64 (SMP w/12 CPU threads; PREEMPT) Kernel taint flags: TAINT_USER Locale: LANG=pl_PL.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=pl_PL.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: OpenRC (via /run/openrc), PID 1: init LSM: AppArmor: enabled --0000000000006842b506044d8988 Content-Type: text/html; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <div dir=3D"ltr"><div>Package: apt</div><div>Version: 2.6.1devuan1</div><di= v><br></div>Severity minor<br>I have tried to install too many packages in = single call to apt.=C2=A0=C2=A0 <br><div>Sometimes instead of doing upgrade= I prefer to do a clean install of the system followed by installation of m= issing packages.
